Last week as I looked around my house for second-hand items I love, I also came across some items that have multiple purposes. Th epost that follows conveys the message that you don’t need to own an abundance of items to thrive in life. Also, the less you buy the better. I find when I don’t have to keep track of hundreds of items, I can put more time into making sure what I do buy is ethical, vegan, environmentally friendly, and local.
#1 Vinegar- I wanted to start with this one because in our family not only do we use vinegar in some cooking, but we also use it as a cleaning agent. Mix it with lemons (which also have multiple purposes), water, and essential oils, and you have yourself a completely non-toxic, simple all purpose cleaner.
#2 Glass Jars- If you are anything like me, an exciting aspect of being environmentally friendly has to do with asthetics. We environmentalists of Earth love our glass jars, and when there are already so many here made on Earth, why not reuse and repurpose them instead of recycling them and buying first-hand glass jars?
#3 Shampoo- This one is just a personal preference but something that I find keeps my life simple. I make shampoo out of eco nuts (which have multiple uses) or use barred shampoo. I don’t find conditioner or body wash necessary, but others may feel differently. I use shampoo instead of body wash, conditioner, shaving cream, or body lotion. It keeps my shower routine fast, simple, and more environmentally friendly. While I am on the topic of eco nuts, those can be used for many things including, but not limited to shampoo, laundry detergent, and bug repellent. Multiple purposes there.
#4 My Backpack- I wanted to share this one because it shows how simple it is to own one thing and just reuse it until that is not possible. I am a student but use my backpack for much more than school. I know people who own one bag for everything. I instead use my backpack for school, storing books, traveling, going somewhere that I need many or large items, and more. It is not necessary to own hundreds of bags.
#5 SInk Water- For this last one, I just want to increase awareness. If you have a garden, I 100% recommend this. When we rinse dishes (as long as they have no soap, or an excessive amount of oil), we save our water (also known as “gray water”) and use it to water our garden. This saves lots of water and instead of letting it all go down the drain, we give it a second purpose. I do not suggest using fresh water in your garden. By reusing water, you give your plants a little extra nutrients as well.
I hope this was an informative blog. I will see you all next week.
